Eugene Morrison Stoner (November 22, 1922 – April 24, 1997) is well known for inventing the AR-15 rifle, which the US military adopted as the M16. Along with John Browning and Mikhail Kalashnikov, he is considered by some historians to be one of the most successful weapons inventors of the twentieth century. Eugene Stoner graduated from Long Beach High School and went on to work at the Vega Aircraft Company, where he installed weaponry. During WWII, he joined the US Marine Corps as an Aviation Ordnance officer and served in the South Pacific and northern China. He started working for Whittaker, an aviation equipment firm, in the machine shop in late 1945 and rose through the ranks to become a Design Engineer.
In 1954, he joined Fairchild Engine & Airplane Corporation’s ArmaLite division as head engineer. He developed a number of prototype small guns while at ArmaLite, including the AR-3, AR-9, AR-11, and AR-12, none of which reached widespread manufacture. During this time, their sole major success was the AR-5 survival rifle, which was accepted by the US Air Force. The groundbreaking AR-10, a lightweight (7.25 lbs.) selective-fire infantry rifle in 7.62 x 51 mm NATO calibre, was first designed by Stoner in 1955. Late in 1956, the AR-10 was submitted to the US Army’s Aberdeen Proving Ground for rifle assessment testing. The AR-10 was smaller, simpler to shoot in automatic, and considerably lighter than rival rifle designs previously submitted for assessment. The army, however, rejected the AR-10 in favour of the more conventional T44, which would become the M14, since it came late in the testing cycle.
